Chaikas
A lesser known conflict of WWII was the fighting between Russia and Finland. The Soviet Union invaded Finland on 30th. November 1939 in an effort to secure their hold on the Baltic region. They held a ratio of 10 to 1 in air power over the Finns, but soon discovered their opponents were on the whole better flyers and fighters. Here, two Chaikas duel above a Finnish lake in 1941. The word Chaika is Russian for Seagull, and the Finns made great use of captured airframes to support their meagre resources.Composition: acrylic on canvas
