Moonlight Return

a limited edition print is available.contact for details.

Lancaster JB 723 (DX-L) with its port outer engine damaged and feathered flies low having taken evasive action to throw off the attentions of a JU-88 night fighter. The bomber's rudder trim cable having been severed, a rope was used on the rudder bars to relieve the pressure on the pilot's legs. With the rear gunner wounded, the 57 Squadron Lancaster flown by P/O Ron Walker flew low to avoid further detection. The raid had been on the airfield of Tours, in conditions of bright moonlight which allowed the pilot to avoid potential hazards on the journey home. P/O Walker received the DFC.
